Why I Do Healing Work
A few years ago a friend got news of her cancer affliction. I’ve never been a big fan of hospitals, and tried to avoid her suffering. But I could not, as she said that she felt better when I was there and got sick when I wasn’t. I’d received several initiations from Tibetan Masters and shamans related to energy healing but I’d only done a little work on myself with these practices. But I had taken my Bodhisattva Vows to help free beings of suffering, so I sat with her doing mantras and prayers and doing my best to be a healing influence-partly to cope with the situation myself. I kept going back until she got better. When her chemo was over we went to a Shamanic Sound Healing Ceremony. When asked why I was there, these words came out of my mouth, “Because the Healing Mandala has opened.” Not knowing what this meant, I began working with my shaman to study and implement healing practices. That’s how it started for me. I continue doing this work because it helps people. As I feel the energy coursing through me it’s clear that it helps me too.
Caveat: I work as a conduit for healing energy. It’s not “me” personally doing the work. We rely on the relaxed state of the recipient and the kindness and luminosity of all medicine gurus, healers of the lineages, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the Ten Directions and the Three times, sages, power animals and benevolent spirits. It’s a healing collaboration of the seen and the unseen. If we have faith it can work.
I’ve received many Tantric initiations and instructions on healing practices in Tibetan Buddhism, Peruvian Shamanism and Japanese Reiki traditions.
In the Tibetan systems, I work with the blue light healing energy of the Guru Medicine Buddha, Moxibustion and other Transmissions from lamas (gurus) who are also doctors of Tibetan Medicine in several traditions; Dzogchen, Geluk, Nyingma and Bonpo. I’m not a doctor of Tibetan Medicine, but incorporate the energy and instruction that I have received from these into my healing practices.
In the Shamanic tradition I’ve received the nine initiations of the Munay Ki:
Rite One: Healer’s Rite
Rite Two: Bands of Power
Rite Three: Harmony Rite
Rite Four: Seer’s Rite
Fite Five: Daykeeper’s Rite
Rite Six: Wisdomkeeper’s Rite
Rite Seven: Earthkeeper’s Rite
Rite Eight: Starkeeper’s Rite
Rite Nine: Creator Rite
I’m a certified Reiki Master, trained in all three levels, including distance healing, with my mentor Rosemary Beam.
“Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.”
I had zero faith in anything like reiki until my friend Tashi Rana started giving me attunements. Once I’d had a cough for several weeks and within 24 hours of her reiki session my chest felt better and the cough was gone. During her sessions over the course of a couple of years I came to discover a feeling of energy as she worked. Because of my experience with her, I became interested in the study and practice of reiki.
